How our valuations work

Every Buybackgold.com offer is built from the same three facts — your item's weight, its gold purity, and the live international gold price — confirmed in person, not guessed from behind a screen.

The three inputs

What actually decides your price

Weight

Weighed on a calibrated scale, in front of you, at the visit. Any online weight — typed in or estimated from a photo — is a starting guess until we confirm it on our scale.

Purity

Karat is tested, not assumed. What you believe an item is worth (9ct, 18ct, 24ct) is confirmed by testing before any number is finalised.

Live gold price

We reference the live international gold price — the same figure shown on our calculator — not a stale or outdated rate from earlier in the week.

Purity, plainly

What each karat actually means

Karat is a measure of how much of an item is fine gold versus other metals in the alloy. The higher the karat, the higher the proportion of fine gold — and the higher the value for the same weight.

KaratFine gold content
9ct37.5% pure gold
14ct58.5% pure gold
18ct75.0% pure gold
22ct91.7% pure gold
24ct100.0% pure gold
Estimate vs. offer

Why the online number and the in-person number can differ

The calculator on our homepage gives you an indicative estimate from the karat and weight you provide — useful for deciding whether a visit is worth your time, but not a guarantee. The number we actually pay is set once we have tested purity and weighed the item ourselves. If your item is exactly what you described, the two numbers will be close. If a chain is lighter than it looks, or a "18ct" piece tests as 14ct, the in-person offer reflects what we actually found — always explained to you before you decide anything.

Our commitments

What you can hold us to

Set after a physical inspection

Every offer is priced from a purity test and a calibrated-scale weighing done in person — never from a photo or a phone call alone.

No adjustments after you accept

The figure we show you at the counter is the figure that gets paid. Nothing changes between the offer and the payout.

No obligation to sell

Walking away costs you nothing. If you decline, your item stays with you — the valuation is always free.

KYC required, every time

Before any transaction we verify that you are over the age of 18, with your ID, proof of residence and a bank confirmation letter. It protects you as much as it protects us, and it is never optional.
